Bio

Working predominantly in bronze, Janene Sullivan creates sculptural pieces that provide a witty entrée into contemporary life. Finely balanced figurative forms couple sinuous lines with quirky accessories that draw their inspiration from our often strange and perplexing use of the English language in a very modern and unique way. Titling plays an important role in Sullivan’s work, providing an entrance into the humour inherent in her sculptures.

Sullivan’s artistic practice has developed from a representational portrayal of form to a fresh and unique take on contemporary sculpture. Her work focuses on the use of fluid, flowing lines to enhance simplified form.

While bronze is her preferred medium Sullivan also carves original pieces out of Hinuera stone, local to her home of Rotorua. Sullivan’s bronze works are generally limited to editions of 12 or 20 while her stone pieces are one of a kind, with both materials providing an enduring permanence to the works.

Parnell Gallery has represented Janene Sullivan since 2007.
