Born in New Plymouth 1972, moving to Wanaka in 1995, drawn by the beauty of the South Island. Olley began to teach himself how to carve in 1997, creating high quality pendants with attention to detail and finish.
“I am drawn to the hard stone for the finishes, colours and textures, are very satisfying. To have, in this southern region an array of excellent stone, provides exciting scope for me. Sometimes I have something I like to say. I find sculpture a great medium to speak through.
The affects of water, ice and wind on stone has inspired my own finishes, nature is a fine tutor for developing and finishing form. I use the old method of hand stones to hone, and finish the curved facets, they wear to each curve graciously, although labour intensive, this enables the finish to be flawless and tactile.”
His passion for larger stone sculpture developed naturally as abilities evolved and once discovering the quality of stone in the South Island. Over the years his work has transitioned into larger pieces.
