Mike Weston is the Proprietor of ‘The Area’ – an independent music and art studio in Auckland. He has been working with Otis Frizzell since 1999. Their collaborative relationship results in works branded ‘Weston Frizzell’; individually produced works are attributed to either Weston or Frizzell.
Mike sees himself as a pop culture situationist, an appropriator and re-mixer of local and international art history. “I’m an ideas person, a creator of representations, and Otis is [often] the illustrator.” In 2004, Mike and Otis worked with Maori activist Tame Iti on a project called ‘Dr Tutu’, an art/music clash of culture. “Tame’s hands-off approach means the Pakeha perspective comes through in the work and that’s fresh for Maori too. I think it’s very healthy to have this ability to play, satirise, manipulate. By re-appropriating ‘Maori art’ by Pakeha artists, I set out to create an aesthetic that was interbred – inextricably and irreversibly…it’s mixed blood.” Mike and Otis’s work features in private and corporate collections throughout New Zealand and overseas.
