Steve Bellamy is a Nelson based landscape painter who specializes in capturing the New Zealand coastline.
Working to large-scale, Bellamy places us right on the water, allowing us to view the shoreline’s natural beauty from a unique and contemporary vantage point. Still and serene scenes in acrylic on canvas are built through a sensitively applied palette in rich natural tones, accentuating the sense of light and shadow dancing across the ridges of a coastline. An avid fisherman, Bellamy is drawn to the sea, observing the ever-changing tones of the water and reflected landforms.
Bellamy graduated from Ilam School of Fine Arts in 1980 where he specialized in graphic design. He went on to complete a four year apprenticeship in Christchurch where he immersed himself in hand painted murals, billboards, and sign illustration. Together with wife Sharon, also a graphic designer, the pair relocated to Nelson and founded Bellamy Graphics. Bellamy now paints full-time, inspired by New Zealand’s natural environment and particularly the ocean.
Parnell Gallery has represented Steve Bellamy since 2019.
