Bio

Sue Schaare's work is inspired by the love of the simple life, coupled with the heady atmosphere of the Hawkes Bay, where the artist lives and paints full-time from her studio. Her works are represented in private collections throughout New Zealand and overseas and she is the recipient of several New Zealand art awards. Schaare has been represented by Parnell Gallery since 1999.

The abundance of artistic activities in and around her home, the winery events, concerts, cuisine and culture, are a rich seam which the artist taps with skill and enthusiasm. Schaare works directly onto canvas with passion, using strong lines and striking colours of oil and acrylic. Her bold mark making and use of colour results in works that are at the same time dramatic and joyful, producing a strong emotional reaction from her audience.

Music is one of Schaare's main influences and sources of inspiration. The artist travels around the country to attend the orchestral & jazz concerts that inspire her, resulting in paintings that transmit what it feels like to be at a live performances. In the artist's own words: "people lend themselves to abstracting because of their interesting shapes, positions and expressions whilst involved in various activities. Whenever I attend an orchestral 'happening' I get so inspired by the instruments, sounds and movements of the performers that I just have to sketch."
