Bio

Tracy Winter is a glass artist based in Timaru.

Beginning her career as a ceramic artist in Christchurch in the 1980s, in 2007 she turned her hand to glass after being drawn to the diamond-like aesthetic of shattered glass.

Winter creates fused glass bowls and, where possible, will gather the recycled glass from sources that might otherwise cast the material aside. Noting the origin of the glass is part of the process, as each sculpture carries a history.

Each vessel is handcrafted and therefore unique. The works are strengthened through a process which includes twice-firing in the kiln before further shaping. The result is a sculptural and luminous bowl, a smooth and tactile vessel.

Having started life afresh in Timaru after the Christchurch earthquakes, Winter identifies with the notion of putting pieces back together to create something new, whole and perfect.

Tracy Winter has been represented by Parnell Gallery since 2019.
