The rich and vibrant artworks of Wellington artist Anna Stichbury’s are magical creations so its fitting that her upcoming exhibition is titled Alchemy.
Gold leaf is often a feature of Stichbury’s works, providing added depth and lustre to the talented artist’s work, yet it’s the process rather than the materials she uses that create alchemy for Stichbury.
“I love this word, the process of transforming something common or ordinary into something precious and extraordinary (like gold). This to me is painting. Taking ordinary materials like paint and canvas and creating something beautiful and precious.”
Stichbury’s upcoming exhibition here at Parnell Gallery, which opens on August 22, will feature her most recent works on paper and canvas. The opening function, which is open to everyone, has a twist. Clients will have an opportunity to make art too and “practice of a bit of alchemy” themselves. Participants will be able to take part in an interactive silkscreen demonstration and take their artwork home.
