Greer Clayton seeks to capture the beauty and energy of what she observes. The natural environment, where water meets sky, is her muse and continues to inspire her semi-abstracted landscapes. Painting from memory, the artworks are not necessarily of a particular place but the essence of somewhere she has been.
In Dreamlands, an exhibition of her latest body of work, Greer’s sensitive exploration of colour and light serenely evokes the subtle variations of the natural environment. Water balances sky in reflection, and the resulting play of hues and tones across the canvas invites the senses to engage with this unique vision of a landscape.
Greer’s skill and sound knowledge of her medium facilitate a light touch. Diffused lines and moody tonal applications describe the textural essence of our distinctive New Zealand landscapes. The large scale of her mixed media paintings further enforces a sense of a vastness existing in memories of lasting views and vistas.
“Our landscape has its own original colour and texture formed from native plants, rivers, lakes and coastlines rising to our ever-changing skyline. I aim to capture some of that energy visually in my paintings.”
