Liz Sofield’s sculptural works in paper and porcelain explore the poetry of repetition, rhythm, and material transformation. Working across hand-folded paper, delicately stitched thread, and intricately formed ceramics, Sofield translates meditative gestures into a visual language of texture, patience, and calm. Whether through the disciplined yet tender acts of folding and stitching, or the transformation of crocheted cotton into porcelain, Sofield’s practice embodies both fragility and resilience. Each artwork is a study in material metamorphosis and attentive making; each mark and fold holds a trace of time and intention.
Sofield’s palette emerges from the land itself. In recent years, she has developed her own naturally dyed cotton thread and earthen pigments from minerals gathered along the coasts of Brisbane and Whangārei, imbuing her works with the subtle hues of the landscapes that inspire them. These naturally derived tones connect her practice to cycles of place and memory, grounding her delicate paper forms in the enduring materiality of the earth. The tactility of her surfaces invites a slow encounter; an intimate viewing that mirrors the thoughtful process of their creation.
