At Parnell Gallery, we have had the privilege of working with contemporary New Zealand landscape artist Sara Langdon for over a decade. In a recent conversation on the Creative Matters podcast, Sara shared a behind-the-scenes look at her journey as an artist, offering insights into her process, inspirations, and the evolving themes in her work.
Sara spoke about her deep connection to the Auckland landscape, particularly the region’s volcanic landmarks and coastal views, which have long been a source of inspiration for her paintings. She paints places she feels personally drawn to—places that hold meaning, evoke memories, and resonate with others who share the same connection.
During the episode, she reflected on her artistic path, from exploring various creative careers to ultimately finding her true passion in painting. She also discussed the role of texture, atmosphere, light, and pattern in her work and the introduction of architectural elements into her landscapes—an evolution that has presented new creative challenges and opportunities.
Sara also shared her thoughts on the practical side of being an artist, including her approach to framing, varnishing, and composition, as well as the importance of building relationships with galleries and collectors. She highlighted the value of offering limited edition prints as a way to make her work more accessible to a wider audience.
As she prepares for her upcoming exhibition Salt and Light III, a joint show with Matt Payne at Parnell Gallery from April 1st – April 15th, 2025, Sara continues to explore new techniques and inspirations.
