Bio

Matt Griffin is a contemporary New Zealand artist based in Auckland, known for his compelling large-scale portraits that explore the emotional resonance of both human and animal subjects. Working predominantly in charcoal, graphite, and aerosol spray paint, Griffin’s practice is grounded in realism and defined by its acute attention to expression, intimacy, and viewer engagement.

His compositions often straddle the threshold between photographic precision and raw emotional insight, inviting the viewer into a moment of suspended connection. Whether depicting an iconic figure, an anonymous face, or an animal subject, Griffin seeks to uncover a shared sense of dignity, presence, and vulnerability.

A largely self-taught artist, Griffin initially trained in structural engineering, completing his Bachelor of Engineering in 2017 before committing to a full-time artistic practice. His transition from engineering to art underscores rigour and discipline, evident in his technical execution while allowing for an intuitive and deeply personal approach to his subjects.

Griffin’s work has been exhibited widely throughout New Zealand. He has been recognised in national competitions such as the Parkin Drawing Prize, where he was awarded both a Merit Award and the People’s Choice Award.
Through a practice that balances technical virtuosity with profound emotional insight, Matt Griffin continues to establish himself as a distinctive voice within New Zealand’s contemporary art landscape.

Parnell Gallery has represented Matt Griffin since 2019.
