Contemporary artist George Gray (Ngāti Hei, Ngāti Whanaunga, Ngāti Pāoa, Ngāti Maru, Ngāti Huarere, Ngāti Porou, Ngāti Hikairo ki Kawhia) creates large-scale oil paintings on fine Belgian linen. His chosen oceanic subject includes above sea level vistas and vast and vibrant underwater scenes.
In his works set above the water, Gray connects with notions of imagined experience, engaging with an introspective longing to know how early navigators such as Kupe, Toi, Tamatekapua, Ngātoroirangi, and Hei, might have felt upon seeing the landforms they encountered for the first time.
