Additional Information
“I visited the shearer’s quarters and cookhouse after four wheel driving with the kids around the Oteake Conservation Park and visiting the railway and tailing huts on the Mt Buster – Johnstones Creek Track. After being baked in the hot sun and blasted by the wind on the tops, this little building represented a homely little shelter from the elements nestled in the valley flats.
Kiwi screenwriter Jane Campion’s The Power of the Dog was also filmed at this location a few years after this visit. The location was re-vamped for the production, and I haven’t visited since to see what has changed…”
– Michelle Bellamy

Artist bio

Michelle Bellamy is a contemporary painter living in Nelson, specialising in capturing the New Zealand landscape with exquisite detail.

An avid mountaineer, Bellamy takes inspiration from exploring the corners and nooks of New Zealand’s lakes and surrounding inhabited landscapes. Back in the studio she creates meticulously detailed large and mid-scale paintings in acrylic on board. Her captivating geographic representations register and acknowledge a human presence on the landscape through the inclusion of familiar features such as South Island cribs and huts, set amongst exquisitely rendered tussock grasses and native flora. Bellamy’s precision brushwork and skilful layering of colour serves to intensify the clarity of New Zealand’s natural light and beauty.
