The work for this painting began on the shoreline in Cape Town. Camera in hand, Turenhout approached a group of women she had never met, instinctively drawn to the dynamic composition among the rocks. A mother and daughter stepped forward to share that they were locals, returning to the water each day, even in the depths of winter.

That fleeting encounter became the foundation for this painting.

Rendered in acrylic on canvas over 280 hours, the scene unfolds in layers of hues amid a sense of reflection; a moment of stillness, held between figures, water, and land.

Working in a hyperrealist style, Turenhout draws on memory, photography, and a sense of place. Water and a palette in blues become both setting and subject, a space of reflection, immersion, and calm.
