Artist Bio

Javier Murcia is a Spanish sculptor based in Pōneke / Wellington whose abstract practice explores material presence, perception, and scale. His MaTi series comprises large-scale, circular wall-mounted works that combine a highly textured sculptural surface with integrated light, creating immersive forms that shift in mood as colour changes over time.

Suggestive of planetary bodies, cellular structures, or geological formations, these works occupy a space between the natural and the cosmic. Their surfaces appear dense yet suspended, drawing the viewer into a slow, contemplative encounter shaped by texture, depth, and illumination. Through this interplay, Murcia invites reflection on interconnected systems, from the microscopic to the monumental, and on humanity’s place within a broader continuum.
