“For The Way the Land Lies II (Mt Eden), I found myself reflecting on the last decade of my painting practice, particularly since I began the ‘maunga’ series.

This mountain, Maungawhau / Mt Eden, has become one of my most enduring subjects, and in many ways it feels like a companion to the evolution of the work itself. Early paintings in the series focused almost entirely on the form of the maunga and its surrounding greenery; over time, the character homes have entered the composition, bringing with them a more explicit sense of human presence. Their inclusion deepens the conversation around home, belonging, and the way we situate ourselves within the land.

The title, drawn from a lyric by Dave Dobbyn, returns to an idea that has long underpinned the series: that the land holds memory, identity, and orientation. This work feels, in some ways, like both a continuation and a gentle articulation of how the series has evolved.” – Sara Langdon

Artist Bio

Sara Langdon is a New Zealand-based contemporary landscape artist whose work offers a deeply personal and nuanced exploration of the natural world. Her paintings are not merely a replication of the landscape, but rather a thoughtful and emotive response to the beauty she encounters within it. Langdon’s signature approach combines her appreciation for both the vast and the intimate aspects of nature, particularly the striking mountainous and volcanic landscapes that surround her home in Auckland. She says, “This exploration [of the landscape] centres around the importance of place as a cornerstone in our individual and shared stories of connection to the landscapes which become part of our identity and create a feeling of belonging.”
