Brent Wong (b.1945) is a celebrated New Zealand artist whose visionary paintings occupy a unique position in the country’s art history.
Wong’s work is imbued with a compelling psychological and symbolic intensity, making him one of Aotearoa’s most distinctive and enduring visual artists. Though often described as surrealist or realist, his paintings transcend stylistic labels, drawing instead from deeply personal, metaphysical concerns. Wong constructs imagined, isolated spaces: vast, still landscapes punctuated by unpeopled architectural forms and levitating objects that suggest meaning beyond the visible. His works operate as visual meditations on solitude, alienation, and the fragility of perception.
