Fatu Akelei Feu’u ONZM is widely regarded as a foundational figure in contemporary Pacific art in Aotearoa. Central to Feu’u’s practice is fa‘asamoa, often understood as “the Samoan way”; a system of cultural values and social structures that shapes relationships, responsibilities, and ways of being. Rather than treating culture as a static reference, Feu’u engages fa‘asamoa as a living framework, one that binds genealogy, community, and ceremony, and continues to evolve across time and place. This grounding informs both the content and the underlying structure of his work.
Feu’u works across painting, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, and glass, developing a distinctive visual language in which pattern, colour, and symbol operate as carriers of cultural knowledge.
