Parnell Gallery is delighted to present the latest body of work from Wanaka-based artist, Sally Bulling, in her exhibition ‘A Pansy for Your Thoughts’.

Bulling utilises mirror as her canvas, pouring epoxy glass onto shaped surfaces imbued with her arresting palette of vibrant or sombre colour and golds. For this exhibition, the artist brings together her large-scale abstract works, her sculptural floral installations, and two alluring new works created from thousands of reflective stickers.

Titled Flowers from: Andy, Bulling’s series of sculptural Flower Clusters draw inspiration from Andy Warhol’s iconic flower prints of the 1960s. Each of the blooms in her engaging installations are shaped after the pansy – a flower that Bulling is drawn to for its rich and historic symbolic significance, “Pansies carry a fascinating history, ranging from their appearance in Shakespeare’s “Midsummer Night’s Dream” to their symbolic association with pride movements. Rooted in French origins the pansy translates to “thought” in English, inspiring the title of my exhibition, ‘A Pansy For Your Thoughts’.”

A unique and luminous light and depth is captured through Bulling’s reflective works, embracing and projecting back the viewer’s own gaze and surroundings – offering an immersive sense of interplay and connectivity between art and observer.

‘A Pansy for Your Thoughts’ marks Sally Bulling’s debut exhibition at Parnell Gallery. Her works are held in private collections throughout New Zealand and abroad.
